Do you want to lose 10, 30, 50 or more pounds? Have you recently reached your weight loss goal but want to maintain it? Are you willing to dedicate yourself to a healthy lifestyle? Then this blog is for you!

I have lost 118 pounds and have maintained the weight loss for two years. One of the things I have learned during the weight loss process is that it is much easier to reach and maintain your goal weight if you surround yourself with like-minded individuals to support you in the process (whether they be in person or online).

I also have learned that learning as much as possible about healthy living gives you the knowledge and expertise needed to lose weight the “right” way. So this blog includes regular posts, a book list, website list, TV list, video list and book and website of the month. In addition, there is a recipe of the month and product review section. Visitors to Weight Loss Aficionado can just enjoy the site for informational purposes or can comment on posts, ask questions, share resources, their triumphs and pitfalls during the weight loss process.

Book Review: Hungry Girl Supermarket Survival Guide

I just finished reading the book “HHHungry Girl Supermarket Survival Guide”. It is a how to guide for the  calorie conscience shopper. The book contains chapters on dairy; cereal; meat & seafood; meat substitutes; produce; canned food; packaged snacks; bread;  frozen meals & meal starters; ice cream and frozen desserts; sauces; salad dressings and shelf stable condiments; beverages; baking products; pantry staples, spices and more. Each chapter includes suggested products, calorie counts and comparisons, nutritional info and meal ideas & snack solutions.

There are some great recipes in the book. For example on page 182 Lillien gives recipes for two ingredient low cal cakes. Imagine that TWO INGREDIENTS!

  • Cake recipe #1: Combine a 18.25 ounce box of cake mix with 1 cup of no sugar applesauce
  • Cake recipe #2: Combine a 18.25 ounce box of cake mix with a 12 ounce can of soda (she recommends yellow cake mix and diet cream soda)
  •  Cake recipe #3: Combine a 18.25 ounce box of cake mix with a 15 ounce can of pure pumpkin

As I read the book I made a shopping list of items I have never tried that I will try in the future. My list includes:

  1. Almond cheese (Lisanatti Foods): Who would have thought you could make cheese out of almonds!
  2. Soy cheese (Galaxy Nutritional Foods)
  3.  Fat free Reddi Whip
  4. Fat free non-dairy liquid creamer
  5. Fat free cream cheese
  6.  Blue diamond unsweetened vanilla almond breeze: I’ve only tried the sweetened version and it was so good I stopped buying it because it was the type of drink I couldn’t stop at one glass with. This version is half the calories of the sweetened version!
  7. Fiber One cereal: The Hungry Girl uses this regularly as a breading for meat and fish
  8. Unsweetened puffed grain cereal
  9. Turkey pepperoni
  10.  97- 100% fat free hotdogs (Hebrew National and Hoffy)
  11. Soy crumbles (Boca and Morningstar)
  12. Meatless meatballs (Veggie Patch or Nates)
  13.  Jicama
  14. Kabocha Squash
  15. Spaghetti Squash
  16. Turnips
  17. Pillsbury Reduced Fat Crescent rolls
  18. Lavash bread (100 calories a piece)
  19. Dessert Crepes (Frieda’s or Melissa’s) 50 calories each
  20. Mini filo shells
  21. Vitatops
  22. Fat free mayo
  23. Powdered peanut butter (PB2 and FitNutz)
  24.  Lucero flavored balsamic vinegars
  25. Apple cider vinegar
