One of the things I have learned during the weight loss process is that it is much easier to reach and maintain your goal weight if you surround yourself with like-minded individuals to support you in the process (whether they be in person or online).

I also have learned that learning as much as possible about healthy living gives you the knowledge and expertise needed to lose weight the “right” way. So this blog includes regular posts, a book list, website list, TV list, video list and book and website of the month. In addition, there is a recipe of the month and product review section. Visitors to Weight Loss Aficionado can just enjoy the site for informational purposes or can comment on posts, ask questions, share resources, their triumphs and pitfalls during the weight loss process.

Book Review- The New Abs Diet for Women by David Zinczenko

I just finished reading the book “The New Abs Diet for Women” by David Zinczenko. The book includes chapters on their diet plan, a week by week diet guide, recipes, exercises, psychological strategies to deal with obstacles, and ways to use the plan before or after a baby. The book seemed to be geared towards individuals that need to lose less than 20 lbs. All the Abs Diet success stories in the book were of individuals with start weights between 113 and 148 pounds.

The book states the reasons why we should strive for a flat stomach. A flat belly will:
  •   Help you live longer
  •  Improve your sex life: more stamina and strength
  •  Keep you safe from harm: powerful abdominal muscles have been linked to injury prevention
  • Strengthen your back
  • Help you win- your core is your essential muscle group for make sports and activities
  •  Limit your aches and pains

The book emphasizes the importance of building muscle. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn. “Building just a few pounds of muscle in your body is the physiological equivalent of kicking fat out on its butt and telling it to never come back again.” The author states you will burn off an extra pound of fat every few weeks without doing a thing if you build the muscle in your body.

The diet guidelines of the Abs Diet are as follows:
  • Eat six meals a day
  • Make the following foods the staple of your diet: nuts, beans and legumes, spinach and other green vegetables, dairy, instant oatmeal, eggs, lean meat, peanut butter, olive oil, whole grains, whey powder, berries
  • Drink smoothies regularly
  • Stop counting
  • Know what to drink and what not to
  • For one meal a week forget the first five guidelines

The book also recommends that you choose foods that are low GI (glycemic index). “If you eat a meal with low GI the food is digested more slowly. Your blood sugar rises only incrementally and that slow digestion means that glucose is available as energy for hours. Insulin does not need to rush in and turn the sugar into fat.”

It is also important that you incorporate dairy into your diet. “Researchers at Harvard Medical School showed that those who ate 3 servings of dairy each day (1,200 ml) were 60% less likely to be overweight.” The author recommends getting 1,800 ml of calcium a day.

The author also states that the most satisfying foods that control hunger and decrease calories during the day are white potatoes, eggs, fish, oatmeal, beans, soup, apples, beef, salad and popcorn.

Additional recommendations the book gives when dieting include:
  •  Sitting down when eating
  • Blotting your food (oil)
  • Tightening your belt when you feel a craving
  • Buying cut veggies
  • Drinking water regularly
  • Diluting juice with water
  • Making drinks count (have a V-8 instead of  a diet coke)
  • Thinking about eating (eat without doing anything else)
  • Stopping mindless snacking

So if you have less than 20 pounds to lose and want wash board abs read “The New Abs Diet for Women” by David Zinczenko.
